Deaf Awareness & Communication for Organisations

Introduction

 

If you are likely to be in contact with the general public or work with staff who are deaf or hard of hearing then this course is aimed at you. It focuses on some of the key issues relating to deafness and communication tactics. It will help deepen your understanding of how access for deaf people can be improved. The training is interactive and will allow trainees to practice their communication skills. The training is delivered by a Deaf trainer.

 

Course

 

The course can be held as a half day (3 hours) or full-day (5.5 hours) course. A comprehensive handout pack will be given to each trainee.

Half Day Course Objectives

Trainees will:

  • Learn how to work with a BSL interpreter and other Language Service professionals / support workers (depending on a deaf person's preferred form of communication)
  • Be introduced to different levels of deafness and different experiences of deafness
  • Learn about technical aids used by deaf people
  • Gain a better understanding of oral communication and lip-reading for deaf people and think of techniques to use in making oral communication more accessible
  • Be introduced to British Sign Language and Deaf culture, background, roots and some basic usage of BSL

Full Day Course Objectives

 

Trainees will: as half day plus:

  • Examine differences in the social, individual, charity and medical models of deafness and disability and discussing deafness in this context
  • Examine attitudes to deafness
  • Consider barriers facing deaf people - including attitudinal barriers and language use
  • Understand the Deaf community and Deaf culture
  • The Equality Act 2010 and Deaf people
